Rethink is the largest severe mental illness charity in the UK. As of 2nd July 2002 'Rethink' is the new operating name for the 'National Schizophrenia Fellowship'.
We are dedicated to improving the lives of everyone affected by severe mental illness, whether they have a condition themselves, care for others who do, or are professionals or volunteers working in the mental health field.
With more than 30 years of experience, and over 1400 staff, Rethink provide a wide range of community services including employment projects, supported housing, day services, helplines, residential care, and respite centres. All our services try to help people take more control of their own lives by building their confidence and strengthening their skills. With nearly 400 services, we support thousands of people every day.
While our direct services have won wide acclaim, we also act in other ways to pursue our aims. We campaign for changes to policy and practice that will impact on both local and national levels. We raise awareness of mental health issues, and challenge the attitudes that create stigma. We work alongside other groups including agencies and statutory funders to enhance the effectiveness of all programmes. And we use our contacts with government to provide a voice for users and carers on national mental health issues.
We encourage the full involvement of service users, carers, staff and volunteers in all aspects of our work, from initial planning through to day-to-day management, both locally and nationally.
Rethink's structure and funding
Rethink's work is overseen by the Board of Trustees, of whom the majority are carers and users. Rethink Northern Ireland Office has their own local committee structure, and is responsible for their own management and governance.
Most of Rethink's funds come from statutory funders such as health authorities, but these are bolstered by sources including central government departments, the European Social Fund, trusts, companies and individuals. Rethink's income is currently over £41 million per year.
Rethink's commitment to quality, standards and principles
Rethink services are designed to display best practice and to be sensitive to local needs. Our quality strategy promotes and monitors consistency and coherence, and ensures that users' and funders' requirements are met. At the same time, Rethink's planning and monitoring systems aim to make all the services we provide as effective and efficient as possible, while encouraging continuous improvement.
In all its work, Rethink is committed to promoting equality, choice, dignity, respect and access to care and support.
