Our core task is leadership - we represent third sector leaders and provide them with support, advice and development opportunities. We campaign on leadership: both for greater professional standards in the sector and for community leadership by the third sector.
ACEVO was established in 1987 by a group of charity chief executives that wanted to develop a networking and support group for the sector. We are now a major player in the sector. A key distinguishing feature is that as a membership organisation, our members play a significant role in leading and developing the Association's work.
The vision
ACEVO's vision is to increase the effectiveness of the voluntary sector. It is an organisation that has rapidly developed since its foundation in 1987 and has moved to a central position of professionalism and authority within the third sector. ACEVO members represent a complete cross-section of voluntary sector activity including animal welfare, the environment, children, elderly people, education, disability, medical, international, civil rights and social welfare.
Impact through leadership
With the aim of raising standards within the voluntary sector by enhancing the professionalism and expertise of chief executives, ACEVO provides various formal and informal training opportunities for its members. We have a wide ranging professional development programme that includes intensive learning days, day seminars, conferences and evening workshops on different aspects of management and leadership.
ACEVO provides courses for chief executives at different career stages. The New Chief Executives' course not only covers material essential to chief executives new in the post, but also provides a wonderful opportunity to discuss a wide variety of topics with each other, and with others who have more experience. We also run courses for potential chief executives - investing in the development of the sector through its future chief executives.
Members of ACEVO are committed to helping and supporting each other in order to enhance their leadership skills, management expertise and professionalism. This includes mentoring and shadowing
